Control of mosquito populations is important in controlling the spread of malaria.
Control has been accomplished by utilizing insecticides. Many mosquitos are now resistant to insecticides.
By sequencing the genome of the mosquito, it is hoped that the resistance genes can be edited out e.g. by using CRISPR technology.
One way in which sequencing the genome could help is allowing male mosquitoes to be rendered sterile to reduce populations in malarial areas.
