Pentateuch
Refers to the 5 Books of Moses (the law)
Torah
Interchangeable with Pentateuch; Regers to the 5 Books of Moses; Translates to instructions.
Richard Simon
French Catholic Priest that stated that the core of the Pentateuch ( the laws) was Mosaic but that there were some additions written by scribes. These scribes were prophets who were guided by divine spirit.

Julius Wellhausen
(1844-1914): Argued that J&E reflect the nature/fertility stage of religion, D reflected the stage of spiritual/ethical stage, and that P came from the priestly/legal stage.

El
After the split of the country, Jeroboam, the King of Israel, establishes a new version of their old religion that they had in common with Judah. With this new religion, Jeroboam establishes ‘El’ instead of Yahweh as their god and uses gold calves (bulls) as his throne.
Elohim
Source E refers to God by this name until his name is revealed to Moses as being Yahweh.
Yahweh
God’s name. Source J refers to God as Yahweh from its beginning to its end.
Saul
Saul was the 1st King of Israel appointed by Samuel, judge, priest and prophet. He was meant to unite and lead the tribes. His powers were checked by the chiefs of the tribes.
David
Replaced Saul because he was abusing his powers. (1) He established the capital, Jerusalem, in a neutral territory. (2) Appoints two chief priests from the North and South to compromise. (3) He establishes a standing professional army. Built a large empire where Jerusalem was the center of religion and politics. Establishes the longest dynasty to hold power.
Solomon
Son of David. Solomon was famous for his wisdom. He used diplomatic and economic skills to accomplish his goals. He acquired so much wealth that he built the Temple where the ark and tabernacle were held. He politically alienated the northerners by removing the northern chief priest, protecting the South more and taxing them.
Jerusalem
David establishes Jerusalem as the center of worship/religion in a neutral territory.
