Sept 19 - Sketching Flashcards
Name some advantages of sketching.
think more openly and creatively about your ideas
create abundant ideas without worrying about their quality
invent and explore concepts by being able to record ideas quickly
record ideas that you come across
discuss, critique, and share ideas with others
choose ideas worth pursuing
archive your ideas for later reflection
have fun creating while designing
What are 5 characteristics of sketches?
Quick: Don’t invest a long period producing them.
Timely: Produce them when and as the need arises.
Disposable: Rely on their usefulness to explore a concept and not on their production costs.
Plentiful: Produce sketches as a collection that explores different aspects of interaction over time.
Minimalist: Use sketches to clarify one concept at a time.
What’s the difference between sketches and prototypes?
Sketches are meant to communicate ideas rapidly. Prototypes test broad concepts and specific features.
When should we use usability engineering?
On more refined and costly prototypes that can simulate the expected functionality. When the cost of design changes it too high.
Should you show your designs to users or colleagues to get feedback?
No. This will further narrow down your thinking. You want to expand.
What are the two methods of sketching in Etch a Sketch article
Scribble sketching
Sampling with cameras
What’s “local hill climbing” problem?
Where a local idea is potentially worse than a global idea.
Describte elaboration and reduction in design process.
Elaboration: Generate solutions
Reduction: decide which ones are worth pursuing, then elaborate those solutions.
Should managers and engineers work with designers at early stages of design, and until the end, even after sales?
Yes.
State the 7 steps of the 10 plus 10 method
- State your design challenge
- Generate 10 or more different design concepts of a system that addresses this challenge
- Reduce the number of design concepts
- Choose the most promising design concepts(s) as a starting point.
- Produce 10 details and/or variations of a particular design concept
- present your best idea(s) to a group
- As your ideas change, sketch them out.
