Sepsis Flashcards
1
Q
What percentage of survivors of sepsis suffer from ptsd
A
40%
2
Q
What is sepsis
A
A life threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs
3
Q
What is sepsis shock
A
A subset of sepsis where particularly profound circulatory, cellular and metabolic abnormalities substantially increase mortality
4
Q
What are the risk factors of sepsis
A
- extremes of age ( under 1, over 75)
- recent surgery, procedure or injury
- immunosuppressant/taking immunosuppressant drugs e.g diabetes
- women who are pregnant or have recently been
- neonates
5
Q
What are the signs and symptoms of sepsis
A
High heart rate or low blood pressure Fever, shivering, or feeling cold Shortness of breath Clammy or sweaty skin Extreme pain or discomfort Confusion or disorientation
6
Q
What is sepsis shock
A
Sepsis with shock is life-threatening. It is characterised by low blood pressure despite adequate fluid and organ dysfunction
7
Q
What is the pathogenesis of sepsis
A
- Bacterial invasion into the blood activating the immune and coagulation system
- Therefor a immunological cytokines explosion and associated capillarity leak can occur
