Sepsis Flashcards
Definition of Sepsis
‘ Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection’
In lay terms, a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs
What is the qSOFA score
A bedside prompt that may identify patients with suspected infection who are at greater risk for a poor outcome outside the intensive care unit (ICU)
How do you use the qSOFA score?
Uses 3 criteria (one point each):
- Low blood pressure (SBP≤100 mmHg)
- High respiratory rate (≥22 breaths per min)
- Altered mentation (Glasgow coma scale<15)
Presence of 2 or more qSOFA points near the onset of infection is associated with a greater risk of death or prolonged intensive care unit stay.
What are the Sepsis 6?
TAKE blood cultures
TAKE lactate measure
TAKE urine output measure
GIVE high flow oxygen
GIVE intravenous antibiotics
GIVE a fluid challenge
