What gram is listeria monocytogenes?
Gram positive (just think, we give amoxicillin if listeria is a possibility in meningitis)
What gram is e. coli?
Gram -ve
Which bacteria causes syphilis and what gram and shape is it?
Syphilis is caused by treponema pallidum a spirochete (gram +ve)
What are the 4 most common organisms causing UTIs and pyelonephritis?
- E. coli
- Klebsiella, enterococcus, Pseudomonas
What Abx in UTIs for women?
Nitrofurantoin or trimpethoprim for 3 days (nothing if not that bad)
What Abx in UTIs for men?
Nitrofurantoin or trimpethoprim for 7 days
What ABx for pyelonephritis in community?
Co-amoxiclav or co-trimoxazole (7 days)
What ABx for pyelonephritis in hospital?
IV Amoxicillin + Gentamicin (7 days)
What organisms cause cellulitis?
- Strep pyogenes (GAS)
- Staph aureus
What Abx for cellulitis?
Fluclox
What is the medical management of bacterial meningitis?
Ceftriaxone IV + dexamethasone
What is the management of encephalitis?
IV aciclovir
What is the management of bacterial parotitis?
Fluclox + metronidazole
Which Abx is used in non-severe C. diff?
Vancomycin
What gram is c. diff
Gram +ve anaerobic bacilli
