Seperation techniques Flashcards
What are the 4 separation techniques?
Filtration, crystallisation, distillation and chromatography
What does filtration separate ?
Insoluble solids from liquids
What does crystallisation separate ?
Dissolved solutes and solvents
What does distillation separate ?
A solvent form a mixture
What does chromatography seperate ?
Mixtures of soluble substances
How is filtration done ?
Pouring the mixture through filter paper do the insoluble solid is trapped and the liquid that runs through the paper is collected bellow
How is chromatography done ?
1) place a drop of solution to be separated near the bottom of the chromatography paper
2) Dip the bottom of the paper into a suitable solvent
3) The solvent moves up the paper and carries the solute in the solution with it
4) Different solutes move at different speeds so they can separate on the paper
How is crystallisation done?
1) heating the mixture so the solvent evaporates
2) Then crystals of the solute will form
3) Last,y we will collect the solvent by condensing it as it evaporates
How is distillation done?
By heating the mixture of liquids to create Vapor which is then cooled and condensed to separate the liquids
