What is Separation of Powers?
. A theory of government where political power is distributed among three branches of government
. The legislature
. The executive
. The Judiciary
Why was Separation of Powers introduced?
. To ensure that no individual section of the government e.g. The Executive, Judiciary or the Legislature holds too much political power.
What does Separation of Powers mean for the different sectors of the government?
. The three areas of government are separate in terms of personnel, no person can be in more than 1 branch of the federal government at the same time.
. In 1992 when Senator Al Gore was elected as Vice President he had to give up his Senator seat.
. In 2008 when Obama was elected President he too had to give up his Senator seat.
