Seperation Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains more then one compound and more then one element in it.
It is a mixture of elements and compounds.
Explain how temperature affects solubility.
The higher the temperature is the easier and quicker it is for solute to dissolve in. And also will also contain more of the solute when dissolved.
How does filtering work?
They way it works is that when you put in some sort of mixture such as wet sand. You need to put it over the filter paper. When you have done this then they water will begin to drip down and go through the filter paper into some sorts of beaker. This occurs because the water molecules are some enough to go through, were as the sand grains are not.
How is filtration useful?
It is useful because when you filter something you can separate different molecules from each other as one might be bigger then the other meaning that it would not be able to go through, meaning that that bit would be the filtrate.
What is a pure substance?
I pure substance contains only one atom or molecule in it and no other.
A mixture would not be a pure substance as it contains different elements and compounds.
How could you test
something is pure?
Check the boiling point and melting point or use chromatography
Explain how evaporations and distillation can be used to obtain
a solvent from a solution.
You can evaporate a solvent, by using a condenser. This will heat up the liquid, making it begin to evaporate. The water vaper (steam) then gos down the condenser and begins to cool down. It then begins to form water droplets into a container.
Describe how to carry out chromatography.
The way to carry out chromatography is by put a rectangular shape filter paper on some sort of ice lolly stick. Then add some ink or what you need to put at the bottom of the filter paper. Then place into to about 10ml of pure water. Then observe what is going on.
Where is chromatography useful?
In seeing what different colours are contained in things like white board markers and ink. In more extreme occasions it can be used to find out what is contained in explosives.
Solute
A solid substance that is dissolved in to liquid.
Solution
The mixture that is produced when a solute gets dissolved into solvent.
Solvent
A liquid into which other substances can get dissolved in.
Solubility
The amount of much some sort of solvent can take in, from a solute.
Saturated
When solvent can take no more in its the becomes saturated.
