Q

decanting

A

Used in the separation of an insoluble solid and a liquid. You leave it to stand, then drain off the liquid.

Q

filtration

A

Used in the separation of an insoluble solid and a liquid. You use filter paper to collect residue left when the water drains through the filter paper.

Q

how to separate two immiscible liquids

A

leave the solution in a separating funnel to stand. They liquids will then separate into two different layers that you can separate by ‘tapping’ the lower, denser layer off.

Q

evaportation

A

this is used to separate a soluble solid and a liquid. You put the mixture in a dish then put it over a Bunsen burner to evaporate off the liquid, leaving the solid in the dish.

Q

distillation

A

This is used to separate a liquid from a solution. The boiling point of the liquid is usually much lower than that of the dissolved solid. the liquid is evaporated off in a distillation tube then is collected as condensation at the end. the dissolved solid is left behind.

Q

paper chromotography

A

This is used to separate two or more dissolved solids in a solution. A line is drawn in PENCIL on a piece of chromatography paper, and a dot of the substance is then placed on this line. The solution will separate out into different colours.
