separation techniques Flashcards
Name the separation techniques
- Magnetic Attraction
- Filtration
- Evaporation
- Distillation
- Chromatography
What is filtration?
Filtration is the technique used to separate an insoluble solid from the liquid in a solid-liquid mixture.
When can filtration be used?
Filtration can only be used when in a suspension, the insoluble particles are larger in size than the liquid particles.
What is left in the filter paper?
During filtration, the insoluble solid that did not
pass through the filter paper is known as THE RESIDUE.
What is the filtrate?
The liquid that has passed through filtration.
Define evaporation
Evaporation is the technique used to SEPERATE DISSOLVED SOLIDS from a SOLID-LIQUID MIXTURE.
SOLUTE VS SOLVENT
The solute is the substance that is BEING DISSOLVED, while the solvent is the DISSOLVING MEDIUM.
Define distillation
Distillation is the technique used to separate a pure
liquid from a soluble solid-liquid mixture.
What processes go on during distillation?
Evaporation and Condensation
cup in the middle between two rock and the ground with the thin plastic sheet on top
water from the ground evaporates into water
vapour. The water vapour then comes into contact with the cool underside of the plastic sheet, thus beginning to condense. Once the water vapour has condensed, it then collects in the cup. The water in the cup is then safe for drinking.
