“Separation of powers” meant that our government would be divided into 3 branches with different roles, while checks and balances made the government “share power” between the branches to limit the power of each branch.

Federalism limits government by creating two sovereign powers—the national government and state governments—thereby restraining the influence of both.
Federalism Leaves Most Legal Issues to the States
Article IV establishes that the states will give“full faith and credit” to the laws of other states. For example, if a citizen gets legally married in one state, he is still married if he moves to another state. Likewise, if a citizen commits a crime in one state, she cannot escape to another state and evade justice.
