Separating techniques Flashcards
How does filtration work?
Separates a solvent from an insoluble solid
What equipment do you need for filtration?
Funnel, filter paper, conical flask, solution
What two things are you left with after filtration?
Residue and filtrate
How does crystallisation work?
Separate a soluble substance from a solvent
What equipment do you need for crystallisation?
Evaporating basin, beaker, gauze, heat (bunsen burner) and tripod
What products do you get from crystallisation?
Solid crystals
How does distillation work?
Separating a solvent from an insoluble liquid by heating the mixture into vapour and then condensing it back into a pure liquid
What equipment do you need for distillation?
Thermometer, distillation flask, condenser, heat
What are the products of distillaton?
Pure distilled water
How does chromatography work?
Separating a mixture of soluble chemicals
What equipment do you need for chromatography?
Chromatography paper, beaker, ink, pencil, water at bottom of flask
What happens during chromatography?
The solvent moves to the pencil line which then stops and the ink starts to move up the piece of paper.
What are the phases of chromatography?
The stationary phase is the paper, the mobile phase is the solvent
How do you calculate RF value?
Distance moved by compound
