Separating Sunstances Definitions Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is made up of all the same particle.
What is a Mixture?
A mixture contains 2 or more substances mixed together
What are the two different mixtures?
Homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures
What is a homogenous mixture?
Mixture which particles are spread out evenly throughout the mixture.
What is a heterogenous mixture?
This mixture is where the different particles are scattered unevenly throughout the mixture
What is a solution?
A mixture of one substance dissolved in another.
What is a solute?
The substance that dissolves (salt or sugar)
What is a solvent?
The substance the solute dissolves in (water…)
What is solubility?
the ability of a substance to dissolve in the solvent
What is a suspension?
A mixture of an insolvble substance in a liquid or gas. Particles are large
example flour in water
What is a sediment?
The insovble material that collects at the bottom of a container when suspensions are left to stand.
What is a colloid?
A mixture in which extremely small particles of one substance are spread evenly throughout another substance.
Emulsion Definition?
A colloid where droplets of one liquid spread evenly throughout each other.
What does concenntrated mean?
When a large amount of solute is added to the solvent. Eventually, it will reach a point where no more solute will be disolve in the solvent.
What is dilute?
Adding more solvent to a concentrated solution will dilute it.
This solution only has a little bit of solute dissolved in it.
