Separating Mixtures Revision Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a substance which has been mixed by two other substances.
What is a solution?
Is a liquid mixture in which the solute distributes the solvent.
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a chemical which is chemically combined.
How can you tell if something is a pure substance?
You can tell by the colour and the heat.
Name 4 ways you can separate a mixture.
Filtration, using a funnel, distillation and chromatography.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is where a liquid turns into water vapour.
What is distillation?
Is the process of cooling and heating a liquid.
How is evaporation and distillation different?
It is different by that liquid turns into water vapour and then that turns into clouds where as distillation is where you heat or cool the liquid so they are completely different.
Why can’t you separate a solvent from a solute using filtration?
You can’t separate it because the solvent is the the liquid you need and that you don’t need the solute.
What is chromatography used for?
This is used to separating mixture of chemical substances into different components.
Describe how to carry out chromatography.
A spot of the mixture is placed at the bottom of paper it is the placed upright in the solvent as the solvent soaks up the paper, it carries the mixtures with it.
What are the columns in the periodic tables called?
Groups
What are the rows in the periodic table called?
Periods
Describe a trend in group 1 elements.
They are all electrons.
Describe a trend of group 7 elements.
They are also electrons.
