separating mixtures Flashcards
Why do we separate mixtures?
we separate mixtures because we want to make sure we have a pure sample of the mixture we have just made.
Whats is the first method of separating mixtures? (in the chemistry booklet)
Filtration
why is filtration used?
Its used because its a good way of separating a insoluble solid from a liquid or a solutuion.
why do we use the filter paper in the filtration method?
We use it because filter paper has tiny holes which liquid can pass through but since the solid particles are big they can not pass through.
Residue meaning
solid left in the filter paper.
Filtrate meaning
liquid or solution which passes through the filter paper.
Whats the apparatus we need to do this Filtration method?
(Any order)
Beaker containing mixture,Filter paper,Funnel and conical flask.
Whats the second Separating mixtures method? (in the chemistry booklet)
evaporation
why is evaporation used?
Evaporation is a useful way to separate from a solid to a liquid and a soluble solution.
Apparatus used for evaporation method?
(Any order)
Evaporation basin, gauze, tripod and a Bunsen burner.
Whats the 3rd separating mixture method? (In the booklet)
Distillation
Whats Distillation used for?
Distillation is used to separate mixture of liquids. These liquids must have different boiling points.
Whats the apparatus for the Distillation method? (Any order)
Thermometer, flask containing mixture of liquids, condenser, collecting flask and Bunsen burner.
Residue meaning in this method
substance left in the original flask.
