Separating mixtures Flashcards
Rules of mixtures
2 or more substances mingles but not chemically bonded
Can be separated by physical methods
No chemical changes occur
Mixtures only have properties of the substances they contain
Decanting
Separating substances by pouring off the top layer without disturbing the sediment or settled layer
Sedimentation
The process of letting dense insoluble particles of a suspension mixture settle to the bottom
Immiscible
Cant be mixed
Miscible
can be mixed
Sieving
a method for separating materials by their seize
Filtration
a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid
Filtrate
Substance that passes trough the filter
Residue
The substance that remains on the filter or filter paper
Evaporation
The change of liquid into a gas at the surface of the liquid
Distillation
Separates liquids + sediments by their boiling points
Distillate
The collected liquid that condenses out of a gas state
Chromatography
The process of separating thee different substances of a mixture onto an absorbent material.
The substances travel at different rates through the material + separate out
