Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Give an example of a pure element?
Anything from the periodic table eg. Helium.
Give an example of a pure compound?
Water (H2O)
Define Mixtures?
More than one substance that are not chemically combined together.
What can a mixture be made up of?
Any number of different particles in any amount.
What is the definition of a physical change?
A change that does NOT require a chemical reaction and does not produce a new substance.
Define dissolved?
When a substance is added to water and disappears we say it has dissolved.
What is it called when a solid is added to water and does not dissolve?
Insoluble.
What is it called when a a solid dissolves in water and a mixture is formed?
Solution.
What is the solid that dissolves called?
Solute.
What is the liquid the solid dissolves in called?
Solvent.
Is a solute pure?
Yes.
Is the solvent pure.
Yes.
What is the Solution called?
A mixture.
What does Sodium Chloride begin as in experiment 4.1?
Small, solid, white crystals.
Wha did the sand begin as in experiment 4.1?
Small, solid, beige grains.
What did the copper sulfate begin as?
Small, solid, blue crystals.
What happened to the sodium chloride when put in water?
It dissolved.
What happened to the sand when it was put in water?
It was insoluble.
What happened to the copper sulfate when put in water?
It dissolved and turned the colourless liquid blue.
What happened when the copper sulfate was poured through the filter funnel?
Nothing it just went through the filter paper.
What happened to the salt water when heated in the evaporating basin?
It had evaporated all the water leaving only the salt crystals.
Could the solvent be collected using this method?
No.
What happened when we heated the conical flask with the delivery tube in?
The water started to evaporate condensing in the delivery tube and dropping out as water.
What is this process called?
Very simple distillation.
What is the essential part of the more complicated distillation method?
Leibig Condenser.
True or False? The Leibig Condenser has an outer jacket?
True.
