Round = Retribution
Punish offender - ‘an eye for an eye’, expected by society, however doesn’t reduce crime, the offender may reoffend
Past = Protection of the public
Protects society, used particularly for dangerous criminals but can also include driving bans. R V Winkler
Red = reform/rehabilitation
Alters behaviour, prevents from reoffending. Used a lot for drug related crime.
Down = Denunciation
Expressing disapproval for the crime - Eg, drink driving bans
Road = Reparation
Compensate victim, giving back to society. Eg, Community payback scheme
Drive = Deterance
Reduces crime - Punishment usually harsher, puts others off committing the crime.
