E.g. murder
Judge can only impose life sentence for murder
Judge can state minimum amount of years D has to serve
Term is governed by CJA 2003
Starting point- 12 years-life depending on case

Discretionary life sentence
A
E.g. manslaughter
Life imprisonment possible but judge does not have to impose I.e. GBH s18 OAPA 1861
Judge can give lesser sentence if appropriate
Life should be given for second serious offence
