Describe custodial sentences
They’re in a young offenders institute until they’re 20 then referred to a prison- half time is spend in prison while other half is on license supervised by a probation officer

What are the custodial sentences for an adult offender?
- Mandatory/discretionary life sentence
- Fixed term sentence
- Extended sentence
- Suspended sentence
- intermediate sentence
- minimum sentence
- home detention curfew
What is a mandatory/discretionary life sentence?
It’s is imprisonment and the maximum can be life and minimum is 15 years for adult offenders
What is fixed term sentencing?
Imprisonment for a set number of months/years, released after half time
What is an extended sentence?
Under s58 of PCCA 2000-10 years for a sexual offence and 5 years for violent offence
What is a suspended sentence?
The CC can suspend a sentence for two years, exceptional circumstances, the offender must not misbehave
What’s a minimum sentence?
7 years for dealing class A drugs 3 years for burglary
What’s an intermediate sentence?
Given to dangerous offenders for public protection
What’s a home detention curfew?
Under Crime Disorder Act 1998, early prison release for suitable prisoners to help them settle back into normal life
