What are the aims of Sentencing?
A
- Punishment: retribution, the idea that the criminal
deserves punishment. There is an element of revenge. - Rehabilitation: reforming offenders so they can be
reintroduced to society, and contribute positively to society again. - Reparation: making amends by putting things right
- Protection of the public: victims, witnesses, general public
- Deterrence: stop others committing the offence and the
offender reoffending

Aggravating factors: things that make the offence more
serious or ‘worse’ i.e No remorse or Bad character
Mitigating factors: things that lower the culpability of
the offender, or make it ‘not as bad’ i.e Guilty plea or Cooperation
