Adjacency pair?
two part exchange, where the second utterance is dependent on the first. they could be found in greetings, invitations and request
Discourse structure
How a text is structured overall
Discourse markers
words or phrases like: anyway, right, okay, as i say, to begin with. They are used to connect, organise and manage what people say or write to express their attitudes
Chaining
Speaker responds and sets up the other speakers next utterance after the adjacency pair
Cohesion
the many parts of a text that help bring it together as a recognisable whole. for example headlines, pictures and text in a news article will all have words and images that link them together to the same subject
Clause
A group of words that includes a little information. it consists of two phrases one is a noun (the subject) the other is a verb. E.g the big dog barked
Complex Sentence
has two or more clauses, one of which being a subordinate clause
Compound sentence
has two or more clauses, usually joined to the main clause by the conjunctions ‘and’ or ‘but’ and depends on the main clause to exist
Subordinating clause
depends on the main clause to exist. E.g the dark barking, that WAS FAT AND LOUD.
