lengths of sentences
telegraphic = shorter than 5 words
short = about 5 words
medium = about 18 words
long and involved = 30 words or more
sentence complexity
simple sentence = 1 subject and 1 verb
compound sentence = 2 independent
clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction or by a semicolon
complex sentence = an independent clause and 1 or more subordinate clauses
compound-complex sentence = two or more principle clauses and 1 or more subordinate clauses
predicate

natural order = subject, predicate
inverted order = predicate, subject

juxtaposition = normally unassociated things are placed next to each other
sentence style
loose sentence = main point at the beginning, following words are oftentimes optional
periodic sentence = main point at the end, preceding words often don’t make sense without the ending
balanced sentence = characterized by parallel structure; two or more parts of the sentence have the same form, emphasizing similarities or differences
