Minor sentence
not an actual sentence as it lacks subject of verb - but still sends the message e.g. “yes.”
Compound sentence
consists of 2 or more simple sentence joined together by one of the coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) e.g. the pirate captain lost her treasure map, “but” she found it later on.
complex sentence
made up of a main clause and a subordinate clause joined by a subordinating conjunction (because, although, unless, until) e.g. Because he was late again, he would be docked a day’s pay.
simple sentence
built from a subject and a main verb e.g. the angry dog barks
“dog” is subject and “barks” is main verb
Declarative
sentence that makes a statement, provides a fact, offers an explanation or conveys information.
e.g. my new car is black,
e.g. he runs 10 miles.
Imperative
expresses a direct command, request, invitation, warning or instruction
e.g. bring me a glass of water
e.g. remember me when we started
interrogative
sentence that asks a question
e.g. where do you live?
exclamative
ends with exclamation mark - expresses strong emotion
e.g. we won!
