What is a Declarative sentence?
Declarative sentences are short sentences that are statements
e.g. ‘The race will begin in two hours.’
What is an Imperative sentence?
An Imperative sentence gives a command or is used to get one’s sudden attention
e.g. ‘Be quiet!’
What is an Exclamatory sentence?
An exclamatory sentence is used to express strong emotion
e.g. ‘This is the best day of my life!’
What is an Interrogative sentence?
Interrogative sentences are used when asking a question
e.g. ‘Is it snowing outside?’
What is a simple sentence?
A sentence with one independent clause
e.g. ‘I went out shopping.’
What is a compound sentence?
Contains two or more independent clauses
e.g. ‘I love shopping; yesterday, we all went to Liverpool.’
What is a complex sentence?
A sentence that contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
e.g. ‘Because things are expensive, we all need to save up to go shopping.’
What is a compound-complex sentence?
A sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clause
e.g. ‘Because we like shopping, people always expect us to have a lot of money, in reality I ran out of money last week.’
