What are statements also called?
Declarative sentences
Statements provide information and can stand alone, e.g. ‘Cows eat grass.’

Interrogative sentences
Questions seek information, e.g. ‘Why is that girl so angry today?’
What is an example of a command sentence?
Imperative mood of verbs
Commands instruct or request, e.g. ‘Don’t eat grass.’
What type of sentence expresses strong emotion?
Exclamations
Exclamations convey surprise or emotion, e.g. ‘You don’t say!’
What is the purpose of desire or wish sentences?
Express hopes or wishes
E.g. ‘May you enjoy good weather.’ and ‘If only I were old enough, I would join the army.’
What defines a simple sentence?
Contains one finite verb and a single clause
E.g. ‘Jack fell down.’
What characterizes compound sentences?
Formed by joining two or more simple sentences with a conjunction
E.g. ‘Jack fell down and broke his crown.’
What is a balanced sentence?
A sentence where two or more clauses have equal importance
E.g. ‘Andrew plays the bagpipes while his sister prefers sailing.’
What does a complex sentence consist of?
One main clause plus one or more subordinate clauses
E.g. ‘The man who wears the tall, white hat is the chef.’
What is a compound-complex sentence?
Contains more than one main clause and both co-ordinate and subordinate clauses
E.g. ‘The woman bought apples and oranges because she needed variety of fruits for her children’s lunch-boxes.’
In what type of sentence is the main clause placed first?
Loose sentence
E.g. ‘Vehicles may be parked in the avenue if permission has been granted.’
What characterizes a periodic sentence?
The main clause is placed after subordinate clauses or phrases
E.g. ‘If permission has been granted, vehicles may be parked in the avenue.’
What are the uses of periodic sentences?
Emphasis, suspense, and linking
E.g. ‘Until you have mastered the rules of the road, you should not apply for a Learner’s Licence.’
