What is a clause
a group of words with a subject and a verb
Independent
can stand on its own. A simple sentence.
Dependent
cannot stand its own. A sentence fragment. Need more information to understand it.
Simple sentence
One independent clause
Ex of simple sentence
She disliked the story. She threw the book across the room.
Compound sentence
Two independent clauses joined together by a comma FANBOYS or joined together with a semicolon.
FANBOYS-
For And Nor But Or Yet So
EX of compound sentence
She disliked the story, so she threw the book across the room.
She disliked the story; she threw the book across the room.
Turn “Sue went to the bookstore. She bought some Cheetos.” into a compound sentence
Sue went to the bookstore, and she bought some Cheetos.
Sue went to the bookstore; she bought some Cheetos. (Compound)
Turn “Sue went to the bookstore. She bought some Cheetos.” into a simple sentence
Sue went to the bookstore and bought some Cheetos.
