Antithesis
Parallelism that is used to juxtapose words, phrases, or clauses that contrast.
Asyndeton
The omission of conjunctions between related causes (The lack of “and”)
Anaphora
Repetition of the same group of words at the beginning of successive clauses.
Parenthesis
Trope for interruption, for when the reader needs to be given immediate information.
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning or the middle of two or more adjacent words (i.e. Skating is a strenuous, stimulating, satisfying sport).
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds of the stressed syllables of two or more adjacent words.
Personification
Giving inanimate objects human characteristics.
Simile
Comparison using “like” or “as”.
Litotes
Trope for understatement.
Onomatopoeia
When the sounds of the words that are used are related to their meaning (i.e. Whizzed, clattered, zipped).
Oxymoron
When words that have apparently contradictory meetings are placed near each other.
Irony
When words are meant to convey the opposite of literal meaning.
Hyperbole
Trope for exaggeration.
Climax
Repetition of words, phrases, or clauses in order of increasing number or importance.
Synecdoche
When a part of something is used to refer to the whole (i.e. “Lend a hand”).
