What is repetition used for
The writer may repeat certain words or phrases for emphasis
What is a list used for
Lists are often used to emphasise the extent of something or how widespread something is
What is a question(s) used for
A series of questions may indicate a writer is exploring or questioning a subject. They may be suggesting they are confused or trying to make up their own mind/work out their own opinions
What is a rhetorical question used for
A rhetorical question may indicate a writer wishes to make the reader pause and think about the subject being discussed or persuade them to agree with their point of view.
What is a long sentence used for
Long, complex sentences slow down the passage and may be used by the writer to give explanations, reasons or they may contain lists.
What is a short sentence used for
Short sentences are often direct, straightforward statements so the writer can make a point clearly using a matter-of-fact tone.
What are parentheses used for
Parenthesis is the use of dashes, brackets or commas to add an extra piece of information to a sentence. This extra information creates additional meaning or tone to the original sentence, for example, to create humor or sarcasm.
What are ellipsis used for
Ellipsis are used to indicate that a word (or words) is left out or implied. Various effects can be created depending on the context such as suspsence, humour or irony.
What are colons used for
Colons can be used to introduce a quotation, a list, an explanation, an expansion or a rephrasing of the previous statement
What are dashes used for
Dashes can be used to introduce an extra piece of information (like a colon). They can also be used to mark the breaking off in a sentence and create a pause in the passage, perhaps to give the reader time to think about a point the writer is making
What are semicolons used for
Semi-colons generally mark the end of a sentence but less firmly than a full stop. It comes between two statements which are closely connected, or which balance or contrast with one another. It might also be used to separate the contents of a list.
What are inverted commas used for
Inverted commas are used to mark quotations, direct speech or to highlight a word or phrase from the rest of the sentence, perhaps to create a different tone, such as sarcasm or disapproval
