Sensory system: Audition and Olfactory Flashcards
Where is the hearing located in which organ?
Cochlear
What is the membrane that facilitates frequencies called and how does it work?
Basilar membrane catches the sound waves and in turn vibrates according to wave lenghts
- The higher frequency wave lenghts, it will catch on the tip and send higher frequency vibrations
- Lower frequency sound waves will catch on the base of the basilar membrane and emit lower frequency movement
How does the hair cells work? What are they called?
Stereocils
When the basilar membrane moves up and down, it displaces the stereocils. These have mechanoreceptors that directs ion channels open to the movement.
When the ion channels open, the K+ floats in and the cell is depolarized
What are the receiving cells from the hair cells called, and how are they arranged in the organ of corti?
Spiral ganglion cells.
Their axons synapse with the stereocils, most are synapsed with the inner hair layer and this facilitates the action potential that travels to the CNS.
The outer hair cells are used to filter sounds and amplify sounds.
In what part of the brain does the signal proporgate?
From spiral ganglion cells to the auditory thalamus MGN -> primary auditory cortex (A1) -> Two pathways (What and where)
What are the receptors for touch and where are they located?
Mechanoreceptors and they are located everywhere in the body and under the epidermis (in skin).
