Q

Process of tasting

A
  • Taste buds detect specific molecule dissolved in the saliva
  • Taste cells within taste buds detect molecules from one of the four basic tastes
  • Impulses from taste bud are sent to the brain stem, the thalamus, then the gustatory area of the parietal lobe which is responsible for perception of taste.

Q

Process of smelling

A
  • Particles bind to olfactory cells
  • Ion channels in the cell membrane open, generating an action potential in the olfactory cells (directly linked to the olfactory bulb of the brain)
  • Impulse is sent to emotional centres of the brain (limbic system) and the frontal lobe, where perception of odour occurs
