What is stereognosis?
Perception of solidity of objects
What is kinesthetic and visceral?
Kinesthesia: Awareness of positioning of body parts and movement
What is proprioception?
Movements and position of the body especially the limbs, independent of vision
What is somnolence?
State of drowsiness or sleepiness, or a strong desire to fall asleep
What is locked in syndrome?
Causes near- total paralysis of the body, but leaves the patient able to be conscious and think
Can’t speak or move
What is stupor?
A state where they are very unresponsive
Can be aroused from this state by vigorous stimulation but only briefly
Sensory deprivation vs deficit
Impaired or absent functioning in one or more senses is deficit
Deprivation is insufficient stimulation of one or more of the senses
How to care for hearing impaired patients
Orient the patient to your presence before speaking
Decrease background noises before speaking
Check patient’s hearing aids
Position yourself so light is on your face
Talk directly to patient while facing them
Use pantomime or sign language when appropriate
Write any ideas you can’t convey
Do not chew gum, cover your mouth, or turn away when speaking
How to communicate with confused patient
Orient and reorient patient to place, time, person, and environment
Communicate that the patient is expected to perform self-care activities
Offer explanations for care
Reinforce reality if patient is delusional
