Sensory pathways Flashcards
1
Q
What is the pathway of the visual system?
A
- light falls on object
- reflected wavelengths fall on eye (through lense on retina)
- Via optical nerve (CN2) the information goes to the optic chiasm en splits to correct side of brain
- Thalamus
- Visual cortex in the back of the brain
- Orbitofrontal cortex
2
Q
What is the pathway of the gustatory system?
A
- TRCs on papillae on tongue
- CN7,9,10
- Nucleus of the solitary tract in the brainstem
- Thalamus
- Primary taste cortex
- Orbitofrontal cortex
3
Q
What is the pathway of the olfactory system?
A
- Odour molecules in air
- Odour receptor cells (GPCRs) on nasal epithelium
- Olfactory nerve (CN1) trough holes in base of skull
- Correct glomerulus in olfactory bulb
- Piriform cortex (primary olfactory cortex)
- Orbitofrontal cortex
4
Q
What is the pathway of the trigeminal system?
A
- receptors in nose, eyes and mouth
- CN5
- Brainstem
4a. Insula 4b. primary somatosensory cortex
5a. Orbitofrontal cortex 5b. Secundary somatosensory cortex
