Sensory & Motor Tracts Flashcards
Sensory information arrives where?
information arrives at the spinal cord
Motor information exists where?
information exits at the spinal cord
What communicates between the central nervous systems and the peripheral nervous system
nerves (fibers, axons)
Information that ends in the cerebral cortex how many neurons are involved?
involves 3 neurons
Information that ends in the cerebellum how many neurons are involved?
involves 2 nuerons
What do sensory receptors do?
Sensory receptors monitor conditions inside the body and in the external environment
Name the 3 sensory nuerons
First-order neuron
Second-order neuron
Third-order neuron
What do the 3 sensory neurons do?
deliver sensory information to the sensory cortex of the cerebrum or cerebellum
Where does the information from the sensory neurons travel to?
spinal cord, brainstem, or cerebral cortex (thalamus)
The information that reaches the cerebral cortex has to pass through what?
95% of information that arrives at the cerebral cortex passes through the thalamus
What does the first order neuron send the information?
arrives from the PNS to the CNS at the spinal cord level then to the brainstem
where does the sensory information arrive from?
dorsal root ganglion
One the first order neuron reaches the brain stem what occurs?
synapses with a second order nueron
Where does the second order neuron send the information?
goes to the thalamus where it synapses with a third order nueron
In your sensory homunculus what parts of your body have more sensory receptors?
hands, lips
Body areas that are more lateral are received where in the cerebral cortex?
Body areas that are more medial are received where in the cerebral cortex?
Areas of your body that are more lateral will be received more medial and more medial things will be received more lateral.
Sensory neurons can be arranged in three different ways.
Sensory modality arrangement
Medial-lateral rule
Somatotopic Arrangement
What is the Sensory Modality Arrangement?
Information that is the same is grouped together and always follows a specific tract
What is the Medial-Lateral Rule?
Information coming from more inferior areas of your body run more medial.
Information coming from more superior areas of your body run more lateral.
What is the Somatotopic Arrangement?
Sensory information coming from a certain region of the body go through the same tract. So all info from the hand will travel through the same tract,
what are the 3 sensory tracts?
Posterior Columns Spinocerebellar Tract (anterior & posterior) Spinothalamic Tract (lateral & anterior)
Where does the Spinocerebellar Tract start and end?
Spinocerebellar Tract- starts on spinal cord and ends at the cerebellum
Where does the Spinothalamic Tract start and end?
Spinothalamic Tract- starts on spinal cord and ends on thalamus
How many neurons does the Spinocerebellar tract involve?
Spinocerebellar Tract involves 2 neurons
