Sensory and Motor Pathways Flashcards
What is the afferent division of the nervous system?
The afferent division includes somatic and visceral sensory pathways
What is the efferent division of the nervous system?
The efferent division includes the somatic motor portion
What are the special senses?
The special senses include smell, taste, sight, balance, and hearing
What are the general senses?
The general senses include temperature, pain, touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception (body position)
What happens during adaptation?
In adaptation, there is a reduction of receptor sensitivity in the presence of a constant stimulus. In the PNS, there is a peripheral adaptation whereas there is a central adaptation in the CNS. The nervous system can quickly adapt to painless, constant, stimuli.
Describe the difference between tonic receptors and phasic receptors?
Tonic receptors are always active whereas phasic receptors are normally inactive
What do nociceptors detect?
Nociceptors detect pain
What do thermoreceptors detect?
Thermoreceptors detect temperature
What do mechanoreceptors detect?
Mechanoreceptors detect physical distortion
What do chemoreceptors detect?
Chemoreceptors detect chemical concentration
What are the three classes of mechanoreceptors?
The three classes include tactile receptors, baroreceptors, and proprioceptors
What are tactile receptors sensitive to?
Tactile receptors are sensitive to touch and pressure
Where are proprioceptors found in?
Proprioceptors can be found in the joints, tendons and ligaments, and muscles
