Sensory Flashcards
General Senses
Receptors found throughout the body, including joints and organs, that detect sensations such as pain, temperature, touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception.
Special Senses
Specialized receptors found in the head, responsible for vision, hearing, balance, taste, and smell.
Sensory Adaptation
The process by which sensory receptors stop sending signals when they are repeatedly stimulated, leading to a decreased response to a constant stimulus. (eg. fan noise in exam room)
Chemoreceptors
Sensory receptors that respond to chemical stimuli, primarily found in the nose and mouth, and are responsible for the senses of smell and taste.
Mechanoreceptors
Sensory receptors that respond to mechanical pressure or distortion, such as touch, pressure, vibration, and body position.
What are the 5 tastes?
Sweet, Salty, Sour, Bitter, Umami
