Senses: 14.1 Flashcards
What are the 4 types of receptors?
- Photoreceptors
- Chemoreceptors
- Mechanoreceptors
- Thermoreceptors
What is the purpose of Photoreceptors?
For vision: rods and cones found in the retina of the eye.
What is the purpose of Chemoreceptors?
For taste: taste buds found in the tongue.
For smell: olfactory cells found in the olfactory cavity.
For internal senses: osmoreceptors that regulate blood pressure, carbon dioxide, balance, etc
What is the purpose of Mechanoreceptors?
For touch / pressure / pain - receptors in the skin
For hearing: hair cells in the inner ear detect sound waves
For balance: hair cells in the ear detect motion
For body position: proprioceptors and stretch receptors in the muscles
What is the purpose of Thermoreceptors?
For temperature: receptors in the skin detect changes in radiant energy.
What is sensation?
This includes receiving and processing by the brain of neural impulses from the sensory receptors.
What is Perception?
The interpretation of sensory information by the cerebral cortex. Often value judgements of the sensations are made and processed to evoke emotion.
What is Sensory Adaption?
When the receptor becomes accustomed to the stimulus.
