senses Flashcards
stimuli
mechanical - touch, hearing, balance, proprioception
thermal
electromagnetic - vision
chemical - taste/smell
VISION TESTS
Visual acuity (20/20)
Blind Spot (no rods/cones where optic nerve enters eye -> brain normally fills in)
colour (XX chromosome - recessive)
astigmatism (defects in lens/cornea)
SOUND TESTS
tick (air vibrations enter middle ear -> nerve impulse sent + interpreted as sound)
rinne (sound reappearing from air conduction in middle ear - rinne positive) (sound louder behind ear - bone conduction/rinne negative)
weber (endolymph in skull vibrates - cochlear nerve damage/sensory deafness) otherwise it is conduction deafness and middle ear damage
binaural (loudness = high pitch, time arrival = low pitch)
OLFACTORY
CN1
SENSE OF TOUCH
thermoreceptors on skin -> sensory adaptation if exposed long
temperature extremes sent to CNS via hypothalamus
proprioception
mechanical
proprioreceptors on muscle -> cerebellum -> motor signals to adjust muscle tension
