Sense Organs Flashcards
Taste Sense also known as
Gustatory
Animal gustatory sense is for what 3 tastes?
3 S’s
Sweet, Sour, Salty
For the Gustatory sense
What are the chemical receptors ?
Papillae
located in taste buds & in the lininf of the mouth and parynx
For the Gustatory Sense
What is the job of the chemical receptors?
Detect chemical substances dissolved in saliva & generate nerve impulses
Olfactory Sense
Where are the chemical receptors located?
In the nasal mucosa
Mucous helps smells stick to hairs
Olfactory Sense
Olfactory process
Olfactory cells -> hairs -> odor binds to receptor of hais -> nerve impulses generated
impulses travel via olfactory nerve to olfactory bulbs then the cerebrum
Olfacorty Sense
Vomeronasal Organ
- Site where phomones are breathed in
- Lined with olfactory mucosa
- Connected to the nasal Cavity
Olfactory Sense
What Is the Flehmen reaction?
Lip Curl
seen by animals aroused by the odors
Auditory Sense
General: How does hearing work
Converts vibrations of the air molecules into nerve impulses
Auditory Sense
What are the 3 Main parts of the Autitory system?
- External ear (Pinna)
- Middle ear
- Inner ear
Auditory Sense
What is the purpose of the External ear?
Acts as a funnel to collect sound wave vibrations and directs them to the eardrum
there are 2 sections-
Auditory Sense
What Occurs in the Middle ear?
Amplification and transmits vibrations from eardrum to the inner ear
Auditory sense
What occurs in the Inner ear?
Converts the mechanical vibrations to nerve impulses
Auditory Sense
What sensory receptors does the inner ear have?
What are they for?
Mechanoreceptors
Hearing and equilibrium
Auditory Sense
What makes up the Pinna (auricle)?
of the External ear
Elastic Cartilage and skin
Auditory Sense
What are the names of the 2 portions of the External auditory canal
- Vertical
- Horizontal
