Sense Organ Surgeries Flashcards
examples of ear surgery?
traumatic ear pinna injury
- can be simple or complex
- if minor VNs can do
TECA
- aural ablation - ear canals removed
- deaf in that ear
- will cause ear to flop - consider german shepherds
Aural Hematoma
- blood build-up between skin and ear pinna cartilage
- VNs can drain, VS add a stent
- often reoccur
examples of ophthalmic surgery?
eyelid deformation
entropion surgery
- eyelid folded into eye causing ulcerations
- remove wedge
ectropion surgery
- eyelid folded outwards exposes conjuntus
- tighten lids
third eyelid surgery
- prolapse of the gland of 3rd eyelid (cherry eye)
- reduced and monitored - often reoccur
corneal surgery
- ulcerations - superficial or deep
- first managed medically then need debriding
globe surgery
- reduction of prolapsed eye
- enucleation = removal of the globe of eye and eyelids stitched shut
how should you prepare a patient for ophthalmic surgery?
- Wear non-sterile gloves
- Place a barrier gel in the eye to protect from clipping
- Clip small margin around the eye - approx. 2cm species dependent
- Remove the clipped hair
- Clean the surrounding skin with 1:10 dilution of iodine and water for a minimum of 5 minutes
- Flush the surrounding area and the eye globe with sterile saline and iodine (1:50 dilution) - make sure that the barrier gel is washed away
examples of airway surgery?
tie back
- airway obstruction from laryngeal paralysis
- given a permanent suture with ethilon
- doesn’t enter airway so clean
foreign body removal
- often bones
- damage and bleeding likely
BOAS
- improve upper resp tract air flow
- widening nostrils and shortening the soft palate
examples of thoracic surgery?
lung lobotomy
- lobes removed via intercostal thoracotomy
- likely due to pneumonia
- opening the thorax so IPPV needed
ruptured diaphragm repair
- diaphragm sutured normal via abdominal cavity
