Sensation and Perception Flashcards
Hair Receptors
Hearing, rotational and linear acceleration
Nociceptors
Pain and noxious stimuli
Osmoreceptors
Tonicity, blood osmolarity and salinity
Olfactory
Smell
Thresholds
Degree to which an individual perceives differences WEBERS law (larger stim- smaller stim)/ smaller stim
Signal Detection Theory
Differences in perception of a stimulus based on internal and external factors
Adaptation
Change in threshold due to environmental change
Structure of the Eye
Cornea, Pupil, Lens (focuses Light), Fovea @ focal point, near optic nerve directs information to brain, Retina = image detector
Parts of retina
Rods= light absorbing cells of retina, electrical signal single rhodopsin pigment low sensitivity to detail and permit night vision. Cones= 3 rhodopsin pigments, color and detail, best in bright light and concentrated at fovea.
What fibers cross at optic chiasm
Peripheral vision fibers aka nasal fibers
Temporal fibers pass to
inner side ofeye but then cross at the optic chiasm aka left - right and right- left
