Sensation Flashcards
By which pathway are position and vibration sense conveyed
A pathway involving the posterior column
Where does the posterior column decussate
Medulla
By which pathway are pain and temperature conveyed
A pathway involving the spinothalamic tracts
Where does the spinothalamic tract decussate
At, or a few segments above, the point of entry to the spinal cord
How are touch and pressure sensation conveyed
They ascend the spinal cord by multiple routes, both anterior and posterior
What is thalamic pain
Pain experienced on the opposite side of the body to the site of the lesion in the thalamus.
Occurs due to a stroke in the thalamus
What causes sensory inattention
Parietal cortical disease, particularly of the non-dominant lobe.
The patient is unable to report the stimulus on the contralateral side to the lesion
What is agraphaesthesia
Inability to identify numbers drawn on the patient’s palm with their eyes shut
What is astereognosis
Inability to identify objects in three dimensions
