Seneca Flashcards
Gloyn - care
There is a ‘cyclical reinforcement of care’ within the marriage between Seneca and Paulina - it is the job of the sage to recognise that they do not just live for themselves but for others too.
Motto - friendship
For Seneca, ‘true love’ is like ideal friendship and is inspired by genuine affection, not the intense emotion of ‘maddened friendship,’ which is what he calls love inspired by desire.
Reinhardt - misguided
Underlines the idea that in Seneca, anger, lust, and desire for pleasure are impulsive and therefore ‘misguided expressions of reason’; the soul is fully rational, and the aim of all people is virtue, so those who are madly in love (like Phaedra) are just ‘laboring under an illusion’.
