What is SEBD?
Learning difficulty where children and young people show features of emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Name some examples of SEBD
Being withdrawn, disruptive, hyperactive, immature social skills, presenting challenging behaviours.
What’s the medical model?
difficulties are seen as coming from within the child, so require medication or treatment.
What is the social model?
Views child difficulties holistically. ways to support the child are found by exploring every aspect of the child situation.
Name some characteristics of ADHD.
impulsiveness, hyperactivity, inattention.
How does the medical model attempt to treat ADHD?
prescribing medication
How does the social model attempt to support a child with ADHD?
getting to know the child, support self-regulation, channel strengths and interests, limit distraction.
What does ASD stand for?
autism spectrum disorders
Name some characteristics of ASD.
Difficulties with social interactions, social communications, social imagination/ inflexible thoughts and behaviour.
What is Asperger syndrome?
Some consider it a high functioning form of autism. Others consider it a unique condition.
Common characteristics of Asperger syndrome and ASD
repetitive movements, resistant to change, need routine and structure, uncomfortable with physical contact with others
What is inclusion?
the process by which we value all individuals recognizing their unique attributes, qualities, and ways of being.
