Engine Fire During Start
If engine has not yet started:
Mixture …………. IDLE cut off
Throttle ………….. Full Open
Starter …………… Continue to crank engine
If fire continues
Fuel Selectors………… Off
Electric Fuel Pump ………. Off
Mixtures ………….. IDlE cut off
Throttle …………. Full open
External Fire Extinguisher ……….. Use if appropriate
Airplane …………… Evacuate
Engine Securing Procedure
Throttle ………… Retard to verify
Propeller Control …………. Feather (950 RPM min)
Mixture ………….. IDLE cut off
Cowl flap ………….. Closed
Alternator …………… Off
Magneto Switches ……….. Off
Electric Fuel Pumps …………… Off
Fuel Selector …………… Off
Electric Load …………… Reduce
Crossfeed ………….. As requried
Engine Failure During Takeoff < 75 kt or gear down
Throttles …………… Immediately close
Brake (or land and brake) …………. As required
Stop Straight Ahead
If insufficient runway remains for a complete stop:
Throttles ………….. Immediately close
Mixtures ………….. IDLE cut off
Fuel Selectors ………….. Off
Magneto Switches ………… Off
Electric Fuel Pumps …………. Off
Battery Master Switch ………… Off
Brakes …………… Apply maximum braking
Directional Control …………. Maintain and avoid obstacles
Engine Failure During Takeoff ≥ 75 kt
If sufficient runway remains for a complete stop:
Directional Control ………… Maintain
Throttles ……….. Immediately close
Land if airborne and stop straight ahead.
Brakes …………… As required
If Gear is in TRANSIT or UP and decision to continue:
Mixtures/Props/Throttles ……….. Full forward
Directional …………. Maintain
Flaps/Landing gear selector …………… Full up/Check up
Inoperative Engine …………. Identify & Verify
Throttle (Inop Engine) …………… Close
Propeller (Inop Engine) ………… Feather
Mixture (Inop Engine) ………… IDLE cut off
Establish Bank ………….. 2 to 3 into Operating Bank
Climb speed ………….. Maintain 88 kt
Trim ………… Adjust to 2 to 3 bank toward operative engine
Cowl Flap (Inop Engine) …………….. Close
Alternator Switch/Mag Switches/Elec Fuel Pump (Inop Engine) ………….. OFF
Fuel Selector (Inop Engine) ……….. OFF
Land as soon as practical
Engine Failure During Climb
Airspeed …………….. Maintain 88 kt
Directional Control …………. Maintain
Power ……………. Max. Continuous
Inoperative Engine ……………. Identify & Verify
Inoperative Engine ……………. Complete Engine Securing Procedure
Trim ……………. Adjust to 2 to 3 bank toward operative engine
Cowl Flap (Operative engine) …………….. As required
Land as soon as practical
Engine Failure During Flight (Speed below Vmc)
Rudder …………… Apply Against Yaw
Throttles ………….. Retard to stop turn
Pitch Attitude ………… Lower nose to accelerate above Vmc (56 kt)
Operating Engine …………. Increase power as airspeed increase above Vmc (56 kt)
If altitude permits, a restart may be attempted
If restart fails or if altitude does not permit restart:
Inoperative Engine ……………… Complete Engine
Securing Proceudre
Trim …………… Adjust to 2 to 3 bank toward operative engine
Cowl Flap ………….. As requried
