Semiconductors Flashcards
1
Q
Conductor
A
- Allow electrons to flow freely due to their atomic structure
- Example: gold, copper.
- low resistance to electrical current
2
Q
Insulator
A
- Materials that resist the flow of electrons because electrons are tightly bound to their atoms
- High-resistance; little to no current can flow through them
3
Q
Semi-conductors
A
- Conduct electrons under increased energy conditions
- Example: applying heat to silicon
4
Q
Transistors
A
- Semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electrical signals and power
- Apply voltage to the gate to control the flow from the source to the drain - On/Off
- Wiring multiple transistors enables the AND, OR, NOT logic
5
Q
Bipolar Junction Transistors
A
- Three layers of semiconductor materials
- Arranged an NPN or PNP
- Emitter
- Base
- Collector
- Analog circuits
- Current driven
5
Q
Field Effect Transistors
A
- Three layers of semiconductor materials
- Arranged an NPN or PNP
- Digital Circuits
- Voltage driven
