What are the styles of expressing conflict?
Nonassertion, indirect communication, passive aggression, direct aggression, assertion
What is Nonassertion?
Avoidance - avoiding the conflict all together
Accomodation - giving in or putting the needs of the other party above your own needs
What is indirect communication?
Not saying but hinting at what you’re trying to convey. E.g. yawning when you want someone to go home.
What is the best type of conflict style?
Assertion?
What are some types of lies?
Altruistic, evasions, self-serving
What are altruistic lies?
Also known as ‘little white lies’, they are intended to avoid hurting someone’s feelings or to be polite and helpful
What are evasions?
Can be lies in forms when we be vague to avoid full disclosure. Can be in form of hints or used to conceal information.
What is omissions?
Withholding information from other party e.g. an affair
What is individualist culture?
Primary responsibility is to help themselves, importance of power, individual wealth, achievement etc. e.g. ‘the American dream’
What is collectivist culture?
Feel obligation towards extended family and community. Importance of group values!! E.g. Maori culture
What is low context culture?
Language used to express thoughts, feelings and ideas very directly. Most info is explicitly stated in a verbal or written message. E.g. USA and NZ direct communication
What is high context culture?
Info in communication is. In the context or person. Info known by all participants, but no explicitly stated verbally (nonverbal cues relied upon to maintain social harmony) e.g. Korea
What is mitigated speech?
It is a term that describes indirect speech present in communication between individuals of perceived higher power distance. It’s when we speak deferentially in order to be polite or show deference to authority.
E.g. co pilot in cockpit giving hints that they are running out of fuel.
What is uncertainty avoidance?
The cultural tendency to seek stability and honour tradition rather than welcome risk, uncertainty and change.
What is power distance?
The extent of the gap between social groups who possess resources and influence those who don’t.
