simple sentence
contains one independent clause and no dependent clauses
ex. malika sings
compound sentence
contains two or more independent clauses that are joined with a conjunction+comma and no dependent clauses
ex. Malika sings every day, and she practices with the choir.
complex sentence
contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
ex. Mr. Hernandez (IND), who is a professional storyteller (DEP), performs at many different festivals (IND).
dependent clause
can’t stand alone as a sentence.
common words:
although, before, because, so that, during, as, when, while, and, that, since, after, whereas.
ex. before she (subject) went (verb) to bed.
independent clause
expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
ex. Kate (subject) noted (verb) the day’s events in her journal.
