Semester Exam Flashcards
2 types of solids
crystalline- exist in regular, repeating. three dimensional geometric patterns
Amorphous- do not have any regular, internal geometric patterns
super cooled liquid (glass)
solid
define shape define volume essentially incompressible particles are tightly packed together particles are held together by very strong forces of attraction
Liquids
no definite shape
definite volume
slightly compressible
particles are mobile, able to move around
particles are held together by weak forces of attraction
Gas
no definite shape
no definite volume
easily compressible
particles are apart and are small compared to volume
attractive forces are so weak the particles are independent
what are the 3 phases of matter and what state of order
gas- state of complete disorder
liquid- state of partial disorder
solid- state of complete order
Matter
anything that has volume and mass
volume
measure of the amount of space occupied by an object
mass
measure of the quantity of matter contained in an object
weight
measure of pull of gravity of an object
class of matter - Substance
matter that is uniform throughout and has a constant composition. It contains one kind of matter
examples= water, gold, silver,carbon
Elements
substances whose particles are composed of like atoms, approximately 117 of these
Compounds
substances whose particles are composed of unlike atoms
a) may or may not be molecules
b) do have a uniform composition
c) millions of these
class of matter - mixtures
a form of matter made up of 2 or more substances that retain their properties may or may not have a uniform compositions
Gazillions of them
heterogeneous mixture
mixtures whose components are readily distinguished from each other and are not uniformly mixed
homogeneous mixture
mixtures whose components are uniformly distributed. They are also called solutions. Alloys are solid solutions
